Bentwood Boxes – Cedar – 2012 & 2013

With David and Brian

Yet another reminder of the incredible skill of the Haida people.  David, Brian and I have been trying to bend a single board into a box.  Despite our fancy tool we haven’t mastered the art yet.  The haida use seaweed and hot rocks to steam boards and then do incredible carvings.  The key to steaming is having a higher moisture content in the wood before you attempt to bend – this ceder was kiln dried which I think is leading to the cracking when we make the sharp turn.  I think that we will try and find some air dried ceder before giving this another go.
